Police in Lusaka have recovered an illegal firearm in Chibolya Compound following an unusual twist in a routine theft investigation. The weapon was found after a theft complaint led officers to a completely different and more serious discovery.
According to a statement issued by Police Public Relations Officer Rae Hamoonga, 27-year-old Luckson Mazuba reported to police on Tuesday that his iPhone 6, valued at K1,800, had been stolen by a man identified as Misheck Mweemba.
Mr. Mweemba was taken into custody for questioning regarding the alleged phone theft. However, during police interviews, he denied involvement in the crime and instead revealed that the complainant, Mr. Mazuba, was in possession of an illegal firearm.
Acting on this new information, police arrested Mazuba, who later led officers to a garbage dump site within Chibolya Compound. There, authorities recovered a Revolver Pistol. The firearm was found to be in poor working condition, had no rounds of ammunition, and bore no serial number, which had apparently been erased.
“A docket has since been opened and both individuals are currently in police custody, assisting with further investigations,” said Mr. Hamoonga.
The case highlights the complex nature of some criminal investigations, where complainants can sometimes find themselves on the other side of the law. Police are continuing inquiries to determine the origins of the firearm and whether it has been used in any prior criminal activities.
