UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) aspiring Member of Parliament for Matero Constituency Evans Mukobela, has praised President Hakainde Hichilema for prioritising maternal and newborn health through improved support to midwives and health workers across the country.

Speaking during International Midwifery Day commemorations held at Matero Level One Hospital, Mukobela said the strides made in the health sector under the New Dawn administration are a clear indication of the President’s commitment to saving lives.

The aspiring lawmaker said the recruitment of over 40,000 health workers, including thousands of midwives, as well as the improvement of health facilities and supply of medical equipment, were testimony that President Hichilema understands where life begins.

“The UPND government is walking the talk. Under President Hakainde Hichilema, we have seen not just promises but action”, Mukobela said.

“The recruitment of midwives, improved availability of maternal health kits, oxygen concentrators, reliable electricity and clean water in our maternity wards.”

He said the role of midwives in the delivery of health services cannot be overlooked as they are the first point of contact for mothers and newborns.

Mukobela further urged local leadership to complement government efforts by ensuring that health facilities in communities such as Matero are upgraded and properly supported.

“As your aspiring MP, I want to ensure Matero is not left behind. We will work towards upgrading clinics, improving supply of drugs and delivery kits, and supporting outreach services for our midwives,” he said.

This year’s International Midwifery Day was commemorated under the theme: “Celebrating Midwives, Strengthening the Backbone of our Nation.”
