…as he bemoans lack of commitment in addressing the vice
By Francis Chipalo
Democratic Union (DU) president Ackim Anthony Njobvu has challenged the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) to take serious action against officers allegedly involved in the Zambia Medicines Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA) drug scandal if it is serious to fighting corruption in the country.
And Njobvu says it is unfortunate that Zambia seems not to be making progress in fighting corruption under the UPND despite promising to do so when in opposition.
Commenting on recent revelations where ZAMMSA allegedly bought medicines at an inflated price, Njobvu says government should not hesitate in bringing the culprits to book.
“We just pray that the government will be able to do something this time and let this not die a natural death like the case of 69 drug containers found hidden in Makeni,” Njobvu said.
Njobvu says that the DU is hopeful that government takes decisive action against perpetrators if it is really committed to fighting corruption.
He wondered why a company not registered with the Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) was awarded a contract to supply drugs.
“We pray that government is going to take action and that they’ll be no sacred cows so that we are seen to be fighting corruption which is a very bad parasite for development,” he said.
Njobvu further challenged the ruling UPND to take action against those found wanting so that they are brought to be book,” he said.
He stated that the drug scandal and corruption in procurement of medicines is part of the reasons the United States withdrew funding to the ministry of health, adding that Zambia cannot continue on this trajectory.
