Residents in Lusaka’s Matero township have stated that they cannot wait for next year to kick out UPND from the government via the ballot box.
Meanwhile, the youth in the township have branded Democratic Union (DU) president Ackim Anthony Njobvu as the Traore of Zambia, in reference to Burkina Faso President Ibrahim Traore who is making international headlines due to his leadership style in his country.
Speaking on behalf of the residents, Lenard Ngoma said people of Matero felt betrayed by President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration which promised Zambians a better livelihood when in opposition.
Ngoma who bemoaned the high cost of living stated that life had become unbearable for most households under the current administration.
Ngoma said despite claims by the ruling UPND that they had delivered most of their campaign promises, majority of the residents were living in abject poverty.
“Fact of the matter is that people are suffering and struggling to find food. UPND promised that they would better , but I think PF was actually much better than they are,” Ngoma said.
And Ngoma said people were ready to usher in a new government next year.
“Mr. President, as people of Matero, we are behind you. We want fresh leadership because we are tired with these leaders. You are the Ibrahim Traore of Zambia,” said Njobvu, amidst cheering from the audience.
Meanwhile, Njobvu challenged the youth to rise to the occasion and take charge.
Njobvu said change can only happen when the youth begin participating in the governance affairs of the nation.
The opposition leader called for unity of purpose ahead of next year’s general elections.
He added that the DU meant real business and is more than ready to drive Zambia’s economic drive in 2026 and beyond.
