By Francis Chipalo
Traditional leaders in Batoka ward, Choma central constituency have expressed disappointment with area MP Cornelius Mweetwa, alleging that the parliamentarian had neglected the area.
And the traditional leaders disclosed that they had continued being insulted by their subjects for enticing them to vote for Mweetwa in the 2021 elections.
Speaking during a meeting with their 2026 parliamentary hopeful, Joe Muchindu, the 58 village headmen stated that people in ward felt neglected.
The headmen also asked Muchindu to facilitate for a meeting with President Hichilema so that they can air their concerns.
The traditional leaders, among them, senior headmen from various villages in the ward also disclosed that lack of safe drinking water was the biggest concern Batoka residents were facing.
They disclosed that they had been depending on a borehole that was funded by and maintend by Muchindu.
One of them who spoke on condition of anonymity said people in the area were living as if they had no MP who is also a minsiter.
“We will vote for you next year because we are tired of being insulted by subjects because of the current MP,” he said.
The traditional leaders said they would in 2026 vote for President Hakainde Hichilema again, but that for the MP, they will rally behind Muchindu.
They said Muchindu had proven to the community that he was the best person to take over from Mweetwa in next year’s general elections under the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) ticket.
And speaking when he addressed Batoka residents, Muchindu thanked the traditional leaders and members of the community for showing confidence in him and President Hichilema.
Muchindu also urged the residents to unite, adding that development can only take place when people came together.
He said it was unfortunate that despite President Hichilema having done so much so far, other areas like Batoka lagged behind.
“It is only us who will develop this area and we can do that by working together because we are the ones affected by the problem,” Muchindu said.
Muchindu’s support continues to grow from various wards of Choma as a preferred candidate for the Choma central parliamentary seat.
