…calls for dialogue between govt and citizens in mining
By Francis Chipalo
Outspoken Democratic Union (DU) leader Ackim Anthony Njobvu has urged citizens to desist from rushing to destroy public and private properties when aggrieved by certain things.
And Njobvu has urged government to address issues of illegal mining in the country.
Njobvu challenged the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) to deliver its campaign promises of ensuring that no Zambian would be labeled as an illegal miner.
The opposition leader stated that it was unfortunate that Zambian citizens are being labelled as illegal miners in their country, and has attributed the matter to lack of direction and leadership by government in addressing issues in the mining sector.
Commenting on recent riots that rocked the mining town of Chingola in the Copperbelt province, Njobvu expressed concern actions by citizens.
The opposition leader says there is alway a better way of addressing grievances as opposed to destroying state infrastructure.
He said government should quickly dialogue with affected citizens to avoid unnecessary riots.
“We understand the frustrations people are having, but we cannot always rush to destruction of infrastructure which comes costly.
“There is always a better way of handling such matters, and that is government engaging the citizens so that we can avoid such riots,” Njobvu said.
He added that recent riots involving mining activities in the country which have also resulted into loss of human life calls for quick action by government.
“People are hungry and are ready to do anything to survive since this government is not providing them opportunities.
The Democratic Union remains committed to addressing all these matters as enshrined in our manifesto. We urge all Zambians to join this party and support us for meaning change in 2026,” he added.
About 79 persons were reportedly arrested in Chingola following the riots.
