A CHIPATA man, who made it a habit of waking up three times during the night to check on his cattle, after previous attempts by thieves to steal his livestock, has been discovered dead and naked behind a food storage shelter, located eight meters from his residence.

78-year-old Malizane Banda of Nkande village, was known for his dedication to safeguarding his cattle, waking up repeatedly throughout the night to ensure their safety.
The deceased, believed to be in good health only the day before his tragic death, had reportedly spend Thursday evening in the company of his wife, their 18-year-old daughter and 11-year-old granddaughter.
On the fateful night, the deceased, in keeping with his usual practice enjoyed dinner with his family at 19:00 hours.
Around 20:00hours, the family retired for the night but the deceased, out of abundance of caution, woke up three times throughout the night to ensure the security of his cattle, housed in the kraal behind his residence.
According to Eastern Province police commanding officer Robertson Mweemba, this routine had been part of his regular pattern ever since thieves had tried to steal his livestock in the past.
Mweemba revealed that around 04:00 hours, the deceased woke up once more to check on his livestock for the third and final time, however, this time, he did not return to his bed.
Upon waking up at dawn, the family were horrified to find him lying lifeless and naked behind a food storage shelter, just a short distance from their residence.
Mweemba stated that a report was then made to the authorities and the local police department visited the scene of the tragedy at Nkande Village, situated approximately four kilometres from Chipata-Lundazi Road
“A detailed examination of the deceased’s body revealed that he was found half-naked, without trousers or undergarments, lying face down behind the food storage shelter. A small amount of blood was observed to be trickling from his right eye,” Mweemba revealed.
Upon closer inspection, the police officers reported finding no signs of physical injuries or marks that would indicate foul play.
“The body of the deceased was picked and taken to Chipata central hospital mortuary awaiting post mortem examination results,” Mweemba added.
Investigations in the matter are still ongoing.
