2 die, several injured as trucker flees in Choma road crash
TWO people have died while several others, including two children, sustained serious injuries in a road traffic accident involving three vehicles along the Great North Road near Maleba Layby, about five kilometers north of Choma town.
The accident, which occurred around 18:40 hours yesterday, is believed to have been caused by a Volvo truck driver who failed to keep to his lane in an attempt to overtake, resulting in a head-on collision with two oncoming vehicles.
Southern Province police commissioner Auxensio Daka confirmed the incident.
The vehicles involved include; Volvo truck and trailer, registration numbers CAH 2269 ZM, CAH 2270, and CAH 2271 ZM, a VW Golf registration number BBF 4948 ZM, and a Land Rover Freelander registration number AIE 4384 ZM.
Daka said the Volvo truck, which was being driven from south to north, encroached into the opposite lane and collided with the VW Golf and the Land Rover Freelander, both traveling from north to south.
The truck driver fled the scene and is currently on the run.
The VW Golf was driven by Abel Chanda, aged 45, of Livingstone, who sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot.
His vehicle was extensively damaged. His body has been deposited in the Choma General Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
Furthermore, Veronica Masheta, a 36 year old passenger of the Land Rover Freelander also died on the spot and Her body has been taken to the same hospital mortuary.
The Land Rover driver, Emmanuel Mbokoshi aged 45, of Chandamali Compound in Choma, sustained serious head injuries and has been admitted to Choma General Hospital.
Other injured passengers have been identified as Oliness Kachimba, 43 of Chandamali Compound, sustained a cut on the right eye and body pains; Mwiitwa Masheta, 2, who sustained a cut on the right eye and body pains.
Six year old Tumelo Masheta also suffered a suspected fractured right hand and general body pains.
Daka appealed to motorists to observe lane discipline and avoid improper overtaking warning that disregarding traffic rules had continued to cost lives on Zambian roads.
“Maintaining the correct lane and adhering to road regulations is essential in preventing such tragic crashes and saving lives,” said Daka.
Meanwhile, Police have launched a manhunt for the Volvo truck driver who fled the scene.
