The Anti-Corruption Commission has expressed deep concern over the rising incidence of bribery in cases involving Gender-Based Violence (GBV), particularly those affecting young girls who are victims of defilement, rape, and other severe sexual offenses.
In recent times, the ACC has noted a troubling trend where individuals, often relatives of offenders, attempt or succeed in bribing law enforcement officers to obstruct justice or secure the release of perpetrators.
The commission in a statement says these actions not only hinder the legal process but also cause further trauma to the victims and perpetuate cycles of abuse.
A reminder to the general public has been made that solicitation or acceptance of bribes in such sensitive matters is not only unlawful but also a significant breach of public trust and a direct insult to the dignity of victims and further undermines national endeavors to combat corruption and address gender-based violence comprehensively.
The ACC has since warned all law enforcement personnel and the general public to firmly reject any form of bribery adding that individuals found involved in such corrupt practices will face severe legal consequences.
The commission acknowledges that the fight against corruption is a shared fight and has therefore urged all Zambians to unite in combating this critical issue by refusing to engage in corrupt activities and by promptly reporting any suspected incidents, especially those related to GBV, through the ACC’s anonymous online whistleblower platform or by visiting any ACC office nationwide.
