Army Foils Impersonation Scam in Choma, Suspect Apprehended

The Zambia Army, working in collaboration with the Zambia Police Service, has apprehended a Mr Isaac Twafuma aged 39, in Choma for allegedly impersonating an Army Brigadier General and swindling unsuspecting citizens of their money by promising them employment in the Zambia Army.
Mr Twafuma, holding NRC Number 102707/90/1 of unknown abode, in Lusaka was apprehended on Monday, 21 April, 2025 at 20:00 hours by Officers and Soldiers at Southern Formation Headquarters, following suspicions raised by an alert soldier, Private Siankomba Sina of Lusaka, who was on leave pass in Choma on 18 April, 2025, after the suspect allegedly approached him with an unusual proposition.
Brief facts provided by Southern Formation Headquarters reveal that on the material day, Mr Twafuma who was driving a Honda CRV Reg number ALF 5620 drove to his girl friend’s place, which is just next to where Pte Siankomba was visiting his relatives.
Seeing the presence of young men and women at Pte Siankomba’s relatives, the alleged scammer introduced himself as Formation Commander, Southern Formation and that the Army was recruiting.
It is at this point that he informed the young people, including Pte Siankomba, who resisted the pressure of introducing himself as a Soldier in the Zambia Army, that he had slots to employ young people.
He asked Pte Siankomba to pay him undisclosed amount of money and that he should submit his credentials to him, and the two reached the consensus that the said money be paid at the suspect’s residence later.
Later, Pte Siankomba rushed to Formation Headquarters where he reported the matter and quickly the troops organised themselves for the apprehension.
The Soldiers led an ambush at the suspect’s residence where he was to meet up with Pte Siankomba so that they could transact, but upon noticing some unusual faces and movements, Mr Twafuma drove away.
His drinking points were spotted and a few individuals interviewed testified that he drinks from there and usually, he is in a Zambia Army combat, purporting that he is also the Formation Commander for Livingstone.
He was later apprehended at his girlfriend’s residence and handed over to the police.
The soldiers recovered 07 smart phones from the suspect, including a satellite phone whose screen saver displayed his picture dressed in a Zambia Army Uniform with the rank of Brigadier General.
Mr Twafuma has since been handed over to the civil police and is currently detained at Choma Central Police Station.
The Army wishes to reiterate its caution to members of the public to be wary of individuals impersonating its officers and soldiers for the purpose of scamming unsuspecting youths.
The public is further reminded that the Zambia Army is currently NOT recruiting and that, should recruitment commence in the near future, the Army will NEVER demand any fee or payment during the entire process.
The public is further advised to verify the authenticity of any recruitment message by visiting the nearest Army Establishment.
According to Pte Siankomba, Mr Twafuwa is a seasoned scammer who, in 2021 even swindled a number of families’ money promising them he would employ them in the Army.
