Bus operators from Kulimatower station in Lusaka have been advised to avoid inconveniencing their passengers unnecessarily, but that they should ensure commuters get to their destinations peacefully.
And passengers who use public transport from Kulimatower have been urged not to hesitate reporting any harassment by some bus operators to the station management for action.
On Tuesday this week, a named bus operating on the Chelstone – Avondale route decided to change course at Hybrid bus stop after noticing more people were heading the Kamanga – Obama way, leading to a near scuffle with his passengers who demanded that he maintains his direction as indicated.
And commenting on the incident, Kulimatower bus station chairperson Nicholas Banda said it is unfortunate passengers get inconvenienced unnecessarily.
Band said the habit of putting passengers on other buses can be frustrating to the travelers especially that one is made to be moved in all directions by the bus conductor, adding that passengers should only be switched from their original bus as and when it is really necessary.
“Yes, I am aware of this trend by some of our colleagues especially on the great – east route where they will tell you the bus is going to Avondale but when you reach at Hybrid they start putting you on other buses and this can be disturbing to customers,” Banda said.
“However, we also want to appeal to our valued passengers to be understanding in instances where maybe there are less than 10 passengers remaining on the bus. I think it will be wise for such a bus driver to put you on another bus, and that is the only time when this should happen,” he said.
Banda further appealed to fellow bus operators to ensure their passengers enjoy their rides, adding that the leadership at Kulimatower desires to do things differently.
“I want to thank my fellow drivers for the restored sanity we have in the station and I urge them to ensure our station remains different from others as far as service provision to the public is concerned,” he appealed.
Meanwhile, Banda also advised the traveling public that all buses from Kulimatower have stickers indicating their numbers, and that anyone can easily capture the bus.
“Please don’t hesitate to report to us via our facebook page or do come through to our office at Kulimatower when you feel you were mistreated by one of our members and we will ensure that we engage such an operator to avoid future occurrences,” he added.
