The lack of maintenance of solar street lights is a source of worry and amounts to wasting tax payer’s money, BuyZed campaign founder Evans Ngoma has said.
And Ngoma says it is unfortunate that despite spending millions of resources in installing solar street lights, government has not taken time to maintain the infrastructure.
Ngoma has called on the ministry of local government and housing to issue a “hot memo” to local authorities across the country, emphasizing the importance of maintaining solar powered street lights.
“This will ensure a coordinated effort across the country to promote sustainable development and community well – being,” Ngoma said.
Ngoma (in pic) further says having functional street lights can enhance security in communities, as well as opening up opportunities for extended trading hours.
He says this will ultimately culminate into a fully – fledged 24 – hour economy that the country needs.
“As we strive for sustainable development and community well – being, I propose that we utilize a portion of Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to finance these initiatives.
Let us take ownership of our infrastructure and make the most of available resources,” he added.
Meanwhile, Lusaka’s Munali constituency parliamentery aspirant Chrispin Chiinda equally shared Ngoma’s concerns on the need to maintain solar street lights.
