Thursday, October 16th, 2025 was a day filled with joy and jubilation in Sichikali village of Batoka ward, Choma constituency when the Muchindu Foundation visited the area to deliver building materials for the construction of a much – needed foot bridge for the community.
Sichikali has had no crossing point to the other side since independence, leading to loss of human life during rainy season, as attested by members of the community, among them, village headmen.
The situation led to children missing school for fear of drowning when the stream gets full.
Following numerous and fruitless appeals to the local leadership to consider putting up a bridge in the area, the community through their traditional leaders wrote to the Muchindu Foundation for assistance.
Without hesitation, the foundation responded and quickly moved in to assess the situation.
Led by executive director Joe Muchindu, the foundation bought building materials for the construction of the bridge, much to the relief of the residents, especially mothers.
The parents who spoke through Chimuka Moono described the intervention by Muchindu as life – changing.
The excited parents disclosed that whenever it rained, they were never at peace, fearing for the lives of their children, adding that the only solution was to stop the children to go to school due to lack of a bridge.
They also said accessing health services and other social amenities in Batoka during the rainy season was impossible, but that once the bridge is constructed, this would become a thing of the past.
And the traditional leaders, among them, headman Hachikwela said the intervention by Muchindu was timely and would never be forgotten.
The 10 traditional leaders described the gesture by Muchindu as rare, and praised the foundation for responding quickly to their need as a community.
Meanwhile, former UPND youth chairman, Charles Shapenga said Muchindu had proved beyond reasonable doubt that he had the interests of the people at heart due to various community projects he had funded at the request of the community.
In addressing the residents, Muchindu encouraged the community to work together.
He said the residents in Sichikali were best placed to handle community concerns, adding that as a leader and through the foundation, he was readily available to respond to the needs of the people.
“Nothing political about this because we are talking about human life here especially lives of our children. I want this bridge to be quickly done before onset of the rains so that we can all be at peace as parents when our children leave home to go to school,” he said.
Muchindu appealed to the traditional leaders to quickly write to Zambia Railways requesting for other building materials (rails) so that construction works can begin.
“I want this bridge to be done within two weeks if possible, and without any delays. We will do our part as a foundation, so we therefore ask the community to play its role too and without excuses,” he added.
