Defence Minister Ambrose Lufuma has called for coordinated action to tackle the rising cases of illegal mining across the country.
Mr. Lufuma says illegal mining poses a serious threat to national security, the economy, and the environment. He noted that these activities are being carried out by individuals and groups operating without licenses, using unsafe methods, and causing environmental destruction.
Speaking during the official opening of a stakeholders’ meeting on illegal mining in Lusaka, Mr. Lufuma revealed that some local officials are undermining government efforts by facilitating illegal mining operations in exchange for bribes.
Meanwhile, Zambian Army Commander Lieutenant General Geoffrey Zyeele warned that illegal mining has evolved into a structured, profit-driven criminal enterprise with the potential to attract terrorist elements.
General Zyeele emphasized that Zambia has already lost hundreds of lives to illegal mining activities, which now involve foreign nationals and organized syndicates.
