DEMOCRATIC UNION PRESIDENT QUESTIONS THE INSISTENCE ON BILL 7 DESPITE PEOPLE’S PROTESTS
By Francis Chipalo
Democratic Union (DU) President Ackim Antony Njobvu has questioned the motive behind President Hakainde Hichilema’s insistence on amending the constitution via the introduction of the controversial Bill 7.
The President, on Friday swore in a technical committee tasked to conduct consultations on the controversial piece of legislation after the bill was deferred following protests by a cross section of the citizenry.
Various stakeholders, among them, the catholic bishops, civil society organisations and political players have raised concerns over Bill 7.
Among the major questionable motives is the timing of the Bill is being introduced as the country is headed for elections in the next seven months.
Stakeholders have argued that the bill is ill – timed and needs more time to allow for adequate engagement.
And DU leader Ackim Antony Njobvu wondered how the constitution could be amended few months before the elections.
Njobvu has emphasized on the need to have the bill dropped, saying it wasn’t “people’s” driven.
“This arrogance and lack of tolerance to people’s views by this administration is very sad. They cannot be advancing such an agenda at a time when the country is facing serious problems such as the energy crisis and cost of living which requires attention than bringing in controversial bills,” Njobvu said.
The outspoken leader has since asked Zambians to once again check if the current administration had their interests at heart.
“Fellow citizens, this is NOT the time for us to be embarking on constitutional reforms. Our people do have electricity almost the whole day. Families cannot afford to have meals, and yet we have a government full of selfish leaders whose main interest is enriching themselves. Can we think twice. We have a chance in 2026 to end all this nonsense,” he added.
