…says the country is too rich to be taxe – burdened

Democratic Union (DU) president Ackim Anthony Njobvu says Zambia is too rich to be taxe – burdened, and has since challenged the UPND’s leadership style of increasing taxes.
And Njobvu says increasing taxes on beer and related beverages will not stop Zambians from consuming alcohol.
Commenting on Finance Minister’ (Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane’s) supplementary budget of about K33.6 billion which saw an increment in certain taxes, Njobvu who featured on Millennium TV’s “Millennium Tonight” program on Tuesday said the country is endowed with natural resources which can help government generate funds.
Njobvu said, instead of burdening it’s citizens with higher taxes, President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration should find better ways of raising resources.
“When you look at Zambia’s wealth, we really do not need to be increasing taxes, but we need to be innovative and that is why our party, because of innovative minds, we look at the natural resources and turn them into revenue for the government,” Njobvu said.
Njobvu said instead of increasing taxes, government should support private sector growth as key development partner.
“We need to support the private sector being a key player in national development, and we can do that by promoting a mixed economy where both private sector and government is engaging in business,” he said.
The opposition leader also bemoaned the cost of business in the country.
“The cost of doing business in Zambia is very high, and for a long time now, most businesses have been struggling because of high taxes,” he said.
“We need to reduce this by ensuring that government begins raising it’s own revenue by investing in strategic sectors and then we will have enough resources to cater for needed services,” he said.
He said doing so would enable government reduce the taxes.
Meanwhile, Njobvu said increasing taxes on beer and related products alone, will not stop people from consuming the products.
He said by increasing taxes on alcohol, cigarettes and other sugary drinks, government was suffocating those in the trade, and hence, killing the industry.
“Do you think by by increasing taxes people will stop drinking beer? Just by changing taxes will not change one’s character, but what will happen is that some of them will go into more debt because they will still want to continue with the same drinking standards”.
“I am more worried with the girl child because they will become more vulnerable to those who sponsor them since it will become more expensive to them, and that is the effect of all this,” he said.
Njobvu added that all this taxe burden can be addressed by Zambia’s young people, who he said have innovative ideas.
“When you are old like our finance minister, the mind begins functioning slow, and this is why the DU is calling on young people to join us and begin taking leadership roles because of their innovative minds,” he added.
