DU PRESIDENT CONDEMNS ATTACK ON JOURNALIST MARK ZILIGONE

Democratic Union (DU) President Ackim Antony Njobvu has expressed sadness the alleged attack and harrasment of Mark Ziligone by a named officer the scribe said can easily identify.
According to the victim, the act happened earlier this morning along the ring road in Lusaka where he came across an accident and quickly swung into action.
Unfortunately, his presence appeared not to have sat well with officers believed to be from the Office of the President (OP) who, according to Ziligone, roughed him up and, and also landed some slaps on him.
He said the named suspect who is yet to be identified even grabbed his phone which was later on returned.
The act by the securty personel has angered President Njobvu of the DU.
“As a leader who value the role the media plays in the governance of our nation, I am deeply suddended with the report of the slapping of Mark Ziligone by a named officer believed to be from the Office of the President (OP),” Njobvu has told the media in a statement.
“According to information on my desk, Mark, a well known journalist from ZNBC was merely doing his job as a journalist with a nose for news. But during his course of duty, the overzealous officer harrased the innocent journalist, grabbed his working device and later on landed some slaps on him. This needs to be condmened especially that it touches on press freedom,” he said.
Njobvu added that the act by the named officer (s) amounts to instilling fear in not only Mark, but other journalists too.
“We urge Mr. Ziligone if he has not yet reported the matter to the police, let him do so without hesitation, and the suspect be brought to book. Need I remind you that the UPND government had assured that the media would operate freely and without any form of intimidation, but is this what they meant when officers from security wings, can be breaking the law against our journalists? Very unfortunate indeed,” he added.
By press time, Mark who described the incident as traumatizing, reported the matter to the police where a medical police report was issued to him. Ziligone told the author that he almost collapsed due to the impact of the slap by the suspect.
