…calls for the need to invest in mental health
By Francis Chipalo
Democratic Union (DU) president Ackim Antony Njobvu has observed that economic hardships is a major cause of suicide in Zambia.
And Njobvu says the DU remains committed to supporting initiatives aimed at improving people’s well-being.
Speaking at a workshop on mental health in Lusaka, Njobvu said economic hardships people are facing had contributed to high stress level.
Njobvu stated that it was unfortunate that almost on daily basis, reports of suspected suicide are recorded in the country.
This, he said, meant that there is an urgent need to invest in mental health and institutions that will offer mental health services.
“We need to acknowledge that mental health is just as important as physical health. It’s time we prioritize investment in mental health institutions, like Chainama, which provide vital services to those in need. By doing so, we can ensure that everyone has access to quality care and support,” Njobvu said.
However, Njobvu noted the stigma surrounding mental health institutions.
“We need to break down these barriers and encourage open discussions about mental health. Let’s start at the household level, where families can support each other, and extend to the church, community, and workplace, where we can create safe spaces for people to share their struggles” he said.
Njobvu added that by talking openly about mental health, people can normalize the conversation and encourage those struggling to seek help.
Speaking at the same event, Munali constituency parliamentery hopeful Chrispin Chiinda called for the need to take mental health seriously.
Chiinda echoed Njobvu’s words of economic hardships as a major contributor to stress levels especially amongst men.
“We all need to play our role in promoting mental health in our communities where continue having reports of suicide. This is very concerning,” Chiinda said.
Meanwhile, Mental Health Hub chairperson Lynos Mwamba said the group’s aim is to create mental health champions.
Mwamba said the hub will be going in different places, raising awareness on mental health.
“We are also available for workshops to companies or institutions where we come and talk to both employees and their employers on mental health,” he added.
