Former Kalulushi mayor Rashida Mulenga has urged men in the district not to shy away but report if they are being abused by their wives.
And Mulenga has also appealed to women to avoid staying in abusive homes in the name of marriage.
She made the appeal following recent Gender Based Violence (GBV) cases and violence against the girl child and women that are rampant in the country.
Speaking during a GBV awareness program on Saturday organized by the Chambishi health initiative in Kalulushi district, Mulenga observes that a lot of men were being abused by their spouses but were not reporting the cases.
She said there was nothing embarrassing reporting abuse despite who the perpetrator is.
“We have men that are being abused by their wives but they are shy to report for fear of being laughed at, but we are encouraging you to report such abuse to the police if this is to stop and that is why we have partnered with the Zambia Police on this awareness initiative so that we can together tackle GBV in our society,” Mulenga said.
The former civic leader also advised women to avoid abusive marriages.
“Gone are the days when women were told to hang on and stay in an abusive marriage for the sake of the children, but things have changed now”.
“Come out in the open if you are being abused and report to relevant offices. We have heard stories of couples killing each other because one was told to be strong and stay despite facing abuse in their marriage,” Mulenga said.
Meanwhile, Mulenga also called on the girl child to quickly report to their parents when one has been abused.
She added that if cases of GBV and sexual violence were to reduce, people needed to break the silence and report the abuse.
