FIRE BURNS KAMWALA GARAGE TO ASHES
5 Vehicles Burnt to Ashes in Tokyo Way Roadside Garage Inferno – Councillor Simataa Confirms
5 vehicles parked at a makeshift garage operating between the Tokyo Way (ring road) and Zambia Railways reserve land in Kamwala have been burnt to ashes following an inferno that is believed to have been sparked by a charcoal brazier lit by one of the caretakers.
Quick reaction and joint efforts from youths from Misisi and Kamwala managed to move about 10 others vehicles which were almost gutted by the raging inferno whose huge plume of smoke could be seen from miles away, and resembled the ‘mushroom’ cloud of an atomic bomb, as the cars exploded into flames as onlookers watched while traffic on Tokyo Way came to a standstill.
Meanwhile, Kamwala area Councillor Mainda Simataa who visited the site and engaged the LCC fire brigade to extinguish the flames has confirmed the incident, describing it as unfortunate. He added that makeshift garages are a grave safety concern not only in Kamwala, but across the city, and has urged owners to operate from designated places while ensuring all fire safety measures are in place and strictly observed.
The inferno has also left the owner of the garage hospitalized at Kamwala Urban Clinic after he suffered shock and collapsed at the scene.
