I’m not bothered by Mweetwa’s statement – Muchindu
…as Choma MP teams up with Mwiinde to “crush” challengers
By Francis Chipalo
Choma central parliamentary hopeful Joe Muchindu says he is not bothered by a statement issued by current area MP Cornelius Mweetwa during the Cooma Maanu traditional ceremony on Sunday.
Mweetwa, in his speech to the crowed that gathered at the ceremony in chief Cooma’s chiefdom declared that he, with Trevor Mwiinde would take on his challengers head – on.
He was however unable to state whether he had endorsed Mwiinde as his replacement for the seat or not.
Mwiinde is among those pushing for adoption under the UPND in next year’s elections.
Other aspiring candidates present was Vitalis Masopo and Muchindu himself.
Mweetwa had previously in State land ward, endorsed Masopo as his preferred replacement should he leave office.
Surprisingly, the lawmaker’s new statement has reportedly shocked some members of the party in the constituency who have questioned his position.
Sources within the UPND in Choma have disclosed that they would not accept Mweetwa or anyone else to dictate and impose a candidate on them for 2026, adding that a wrong candidate would cost the UPND votes as they would prefer going for an independent candidate.
And when approached for a comment on the statement uttered by the minister, Muchindu, who has been tipped as a favorite replacement for Mweetwa under the ruling party ticket, laughed – off the information minister’s utterances.
“Why should I be bothered by that because those are just words which mean nothing to me, and moreover, what is on the ground is very much different. The people will decide when that time comes because they’re the ones seeing who is doing what for them,” he said.
Muchindu said his focus at the moment was contributing to community development through the Joe Muchindu foundation.
“And that is why we are here at this ceremony because we believe that chiefs are equal partners for development. We have also continued engaging various traditional leaders in all the wards, not only identifying challenges, but also working out solutions as well with the participation of community members,” he said.
“We are currently facilitating for the construction of a bridge in Sichikali, Batoka ward. Such is where our focus is as a foundation as opposed to issuing empty statements which add no value to our people,” he added.
Meanwhile, Muchindu also donated a cow at the ceremony, a gesture he said was meant for the people to enjoy, and also as an emulation to President Hakainde Hichilema who also donated five animals and bags of mealie meal.
Muchindu later on shared a light moment with Mweetwa, much to the delight of onlookers.
