EDGAR LUNGU family spokesman and prominent Lusaka lawyer Makebi Zulu says if President Hakainde Hichilema were to, today, delegate Vice-President Mutale Nalumango to preside over late president Edgar Lungu’s funeral, the ECL family will by tomorrow transport his remains for burial in Zambia.
Featuring on EMV last evening, Makebi said he was ready to go to jail if fighting to ensure late president Edgar Lungu’s wishes for a dignified burial is an offence.
Zulu said if the Head of State were to delegate his Vice-President, the family would transport Edgar Lungu’s mortal remains.
“If today the President [Hakainde Hichilema] says, I’ll not be in attendance, I’ll hand over to the Vice-President [Mutale Nalumango], we’ll give him [Edgar Lungu] his full honours; tomorrow, we’ll start off to come to Zambia.
“It is that simple. And that’s why we are saying, let us pray for the government so that reason prevails over ego to indeed respect the wishes of the family and do away with this whole thing because, just this…issue is the one that has led to all this propaganda, all this false news that has been propagated against the family. And it ought not be that way. We have to respect the widow, we have to respect the family,” Makebi Zulu said.
He said he and the Lungu family are not afraid of coming back to Zambia whatever plans government may have against them.
“There is no offence that has been committed by either myself or any member of the family that is worth any person being arrested for. As a matter of fact, even assuming that there was, it is only prudent to go back home and face those challenges that are there.
“And no one is afraid to face challenges; if we have breached the law, let us deal with the law as it is … We’re seeking only, to have a dignified burial for ECL. We’ll protect that wish even if it takes anyone of us going to prison, even if it takes me going to prison as spokesperson, for wanting to honour the wishes of ECL or the family, I’ll gladly do so, if it amounts to an offence,” Zulu said.
Zulu says in as far as he is concerned, neither himself nor any Lungu family member has committed an offence warranting arrest.
“But I can guarantee you that no offence has been committed, Zambia is our home, we’re coming back home. Whatever the plans may be, we’re still coming home to face things for what they are.
“We know that we are protected by the law, even if institutions of government may not want to rely on the law. We’ll still come and know that we’re protected by the law. If they do something wrong, Zambians will judge for themselves,” Zulu says.
He continues that:”But know that we’re not afraid to come home… This is what we were saying, we have to assert our freedom. If it can’t be given to us, we’ll get it by whatever means necessary, of course within the legal limits that we have.”
