The ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) has endorsed self-media regulation as opposed to statutory regulation.
And the ruling party has reaffirmed President Hakainde Hichilema’s stance on media self regulation.
This follows a protest led by MISA-Zambia against statutory regulation during this year’s World Press Freedom Day.
Among other protesters were the Media Workers Association of Zambia, Free Press Initiative, and journalists.
Meanwhile, another team championing statutory regulation led by Media Liaison Committee also held a match passed in commemorating World Press Freedom Day.
The two events held in Lusaka have attracted mixed reactions from journalists and other media practitioners, who have since bemoaned the lack of unity in the industry.
And speaking at a media briefing Monday morning, veteran journalist and UPND media official Amos Chanda said inherent structures, thinking, and values that underpin media freedom are self-regulation.
Chanda stated that self-regulation is the only acceptable guaranteed way of independence of the media, adding that the press cannot and should not be regulated as proposed by a certain group championing for statutory regulation for the media.
“The position is that the President will support free media regulation unhindered by anything, and we reinforce this as a media team and party perspective,” Chanda said.
And Chanda, who was also press aide to former President Edgar Lungu, said regulation of the media is a moral judgment.
“You cannot regulate the media. The independence of the press is premised on self-regulation. These are moral issues that tell you what is wrong and right in your reporting,” he said.
The veteran scribe added that there are currently enough laws in the country regulating the media, stressing that self-regulation is the only way.
Meanwhile, UPND media director Mark Simuwe said the president’s stance is self-media regulation and that that will never change.
“The President’s position is well known, and it will not change because he believes in a free press, and that is why, as long as he remains President, no media house will be closed,” said Simuwe amidst cheers from the press.
Simuwe has, however, reminded the media to be responsible and ethical in their reporting, adding that under UPND, press freedom is guaranteed.
