Ministry of Information and Media permanent secretary Thabo Kawana has called on media practitioners to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) with caution.
And Misa – Zambia chairperson Lorraine Mwanza says the media must among others, invest in capacity building, digital media literacy and ethical AI awareness.
Speaking at a freedom of expression and world press freedom day pre – commemoration conference Wednesday morning, Kawana says when misused, AI can lead to the spread of misinformation, manipulate public opinion, and create environments of surveillance that threaten the confidentiality and independence of journalistic work.
He advises that media houses should adopt AI ethics guidelines to safeguard accuracy, fairness and accountability.
“This is not merely a technical issue,” he declared. “It is a battle for the soul of journalism. If AI is left to operate in the absence of ethics, it will erode the very freedoms our constitution guarantees,” Kamwama said.
Kawana noted that Zambia’s media landscape – already under pressure from political and economic forces now faces an even more complex challenge: maintaining editorial independence and truthfulness in a world where machines, and not journalists, increasingly generate content.
In relation to press freedom, Kwamana reminded the media saying; “We must remember that press freedom was never given – it was won, through sacrifice and courage”.
“We owe it to those who came before us to ensure it is not destroyed by digital tools lacking conscience,” he added.
And speaking earlier, Mwanza sounded the alarm on the growing influence of AI, warning that without immediate ethical safeguards, the future of journalism in Zambia and beyond hangs in the balance.
“AI is no longer lurking in Silicon Valley labs -it is here, in our newsrooms, shaping headlines and rewriting the way truth is constructed,” Mwanza said.
While acknowledging the potential of AI to support investigative journalism, streamline fact-checking, and break language barriers,
Mwanza warned that the same technology is rapidly becoming a weapon of misinformation and manipulation.
“AI can distort reality, erode public trust, and drown out independent voices under the weight of machine-generated noise,” Mwanza added.
Meanwhile, Zambia will this Saturday May 3rd join the rest of the world in commemorating press freedom day under the theme “Reporting in the new world: The Impact of artificial intelligence on press freedom and the media”.
