CITIZENS First president Harry Kalaba has opposed president Hakainde Hichilema’s decision to seek re-election and extend his mandate beyond 2026.
Kalaba citied alleged failures and shortcomings of Hichilema’s administration as reasons to seek fresh leadership for the country.

In a letter to addressed to the President, Kalaba noted that Zambians have endured extended hours of load-shedding stretching into the late hours of the night, and a high cost of living that remains out of reach for most citizens.
He lamented that the country is now more divided than ever with people increasingly identifying along tribal, political, and economic lines hence, this was a grave disservice to citizens who yearn for unity, peace and progress.
“Your administration has robbed the nation of its very foundation of the rule of law. By usurping the power and independence of Parliament, the Judiciary and all investigative arms of government, you have left us with a brittle democracy that serves only your interests,” part of his letter stated.
“To seek re-election would be a disservice to the Zambian people, who deserve a leader capable of addressing their needs and ushering in a brighter future for our nation.”
Kalaba added that Hichilema’s leadership style is incompatible with the ethos of public service, suggesting that his private sector background has left him unprepared to effectively serve the Zambian people.
