A grassroot soccer tournament in Munali constituency has been launched with an aim of keeping young stars away from bad vices.
Meanwhile, local community leader Chrispin Chiinda who graced the event over the weekend alongside Decisive Minds at Chainama grounds, said lack of recreation facilities had contributed to the increasing number of junkies in the community.
Chiinda expressed hope that the soccer tournament would keep children occupied with something positive and away from illicit activities.
Chiinda who is also Munali constituency parliamentery hopeful stressed that lack of recreation facilities as well as activities had contributed to the increase number of junkies in the community.
The outspoken community leader pledged that once elected Munali MP in next year’s elections, he would ensure that an investment in recreation facilities for young people is prioritized.
Having supported similar initiatives in the recent past elsewhere, Chiinda urged targeted young boys and girls from PHI, Chainama, Mtendere and surrounding areas to be disciplined.
“My message to you is focus on school and embrace hard work. We have contributed a K5000 in this month tournament as a way of supplementing whatever the organizers have put in,” he added.
Meanwhile, Decisive Minds executive director Kennedy Mutale took advantage of the event to sensitize the participants, mostly teenagers on dangers of indulging in drugs and alcohol abuse.
Mutale further encouraged the children to be disciplined if they are to make it in life.
He added that his organization remains committed to ensuring that society brings up morally upright citizens.
The mental health activist explained that Decisive Mind’s mission is to ensure that positive human development is embraced through among others, training, advocacy and raising awareness on drug abuse.
Mutule also commended Chiinda for his continued support to initiatives aimed at empowering young people.
20 boys and 12 teams for girls will be participating in the sports tournament whose finals are expected to take place at the month-end of August, 2025.
