IN December 2014, a day before Christmas, when Luundu Mwanakasale was just a 24 year old teaching student engaged to her fiancé, she was involved in a road accident on her way to Livingstone to try on her wedding dress.

On the fateful day, her then fiancé was the one driving and just when they reached Monze, the car overturned. Unfortunately, Luundu sustained a spine injury that robbed her of her ability to walk again.

Her man, however, escaped all injuries and came out just fine. Luundu suffered a spinal stroke, became paralysed from the waist down and lost her five months pregnancy.

She was told she would never walk again and that’s how she got confined to a wheelchair.

This happened just a month before her scheduled wedding.

However, her wedding plans could not take off as when the big day came, she was still hospitalised.

She told Kalemba in an interview that she spent close to three months in hospital while her fiancé pretended to stick around.

Three years after the accident, Luundu and her man were still dating not knowing that he had found a woman who, unlike her, could walk and intended to marry.

Like Keri Hilson’s ‘Promise In The Dark,’ the promises made and the bright future envisioned of spending life together were all broken.

Luundu’s life came crashing when she learned about her fiancé’s prospective wedding four days before he could tie the knot. Reason for marrying someone else? Because Luundu could no longer walk.

“We dated for two years. So three years after the accident, he changed and married someone else. I would say we dated for five years. After the accident he married someone else, I just heard from my friend, four days before his wedding that he was getting married,” she revealed.

“If it wasn’t for my friend, I wasn’t going to know he was getting married. Because all [these happened] while we were communicating and everything was just fine and he kept telling me he would still marry me. After I heard the news of his wedding, I called him and he never answered until three weeks after his wedding.”

Luundu got into depression and dropped out of school in her second year of college.

“The day I found out he was getting married, I fell into real depression and I resorted to baking to cool down. After three weeks of his wedding, he called me to ask if my bank account was working because he was the one paying my hospital bills and he just sent the money and went quiet,” Luundu told Kalemba.

In 2021, the teacher lady finally healed and said ‘isenough isenough, nalila vyambili’ and decided to go back to school and enrolled at Chreso University to pursue a bachelors degree in Education.

On Friday, Luundu who is also her mom’s only child graduated with a distinction in bachelor’s of Education and she is geared to teach pupils how to recite the rights and duties of a good citizen and fear God (Civic Education and Religious Education).

“I decided to get up because I thought of the people that fought for me to be alive when I was in the hospital while I was in depression. I would not even eat what I used to cook. I decided to go back to school because of my family that took care of me when I was sick. I said I will not progress because of a man who has decided to progress and chosen his happiness,” she said.

Eleven years later, 35 year old Luundu Mwanakasale is now happily engaged to a man she calls the love of her life, who saw beyond her disability.
