KAYEMBE multipurpose cooperative society in Lwingishi Ward of Mansa Central Constituency has established a thriving fish farming project following the receipt of a K30,000 Constituency Development Fund (CDF) grant.

Cooperative chairperson, Richard Chongo, said the group invested the funds in the purchase of 4,500 fingerlings and has since empowered all 40 cooperative members with hands-on training in pond construction and fish care, provided by the council’s fisheries department.

Chongo added that beyond empowering members, the project has also created a full-time job for one worker, Moses Njapau, whose life-changing job now enables him to meet his daily needs.

“We are thankful to the government for CDF. Since receiving the grant, all 40 members of our cooperative have gained hands-on experience in fish farming,” he said.

And cooperative treasurer, Daniel Mulenga, explained that the availability of fish locally will provide a cheaper and more accessible source of protein, particularly for vulnerable groups such as malnourished children, who previously depended on distant markets like Samfya for the commodity.

According to Mansa municipal council, the cooperative expects its first harvest in December this year.
