Democratic Union (DU) president Ackim Anthony Njobvu has challenged the church to speak out against alleged injustices on certain individuals.
And Njobvu has observed that the clergy haven’t done much as far as protection of human rights is concerned.
Speaking on Christian Nation’s Sunday show, Njobvu said the church had a huge role to play in the promotion and protection of human rights.
Unfortunately, Njobvu said the clergy in the country wasn’t doing much, and that there was a need to up the game.
“Unfortunately, the church is not doing much because the politicians are in charge of the law which the clergy is supposed to adhere to,” he said.
He said the role of the church in ensuring that human rights are protected and rule of law upheld cannot be compromised.
The opposition leader further said there is need for the country to pass laws in the interest of the people.
He added that that is why his party continues engaging various church leaders in ensuring that Zambia is put on the right track in terms of leadership, adding that the DU’s agenda is ensuring that no Zambian is seen to be abused by politicians whatsoever.
Njobvu’s remarks comes from the background where some sections of society, among them, opposition political party leaders have complained and accused the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) of alleged human rights abuses in the country, accusations government denies.
