The Zambia Red Cross Society (ZRCS) has launched the “Acute Crisis Project” in Gwembe district of Southern province to assist about 2,500 households affected by recent floods.
With support from the Netherlands Red Cross, the initiative will provide K600 per month for three months to the affected families.
The emergency cash assistance is aimed at helping flood victims in the district meet their immediate basic needs such as food and other household needs.
Speaking during the launch of the project, Gwembe district commissioner Killion Chikandula praised the initiative, stating that the support comes at a critical time for the district as many affected families were struggling to survive following the floods.
Meanwhile, ZRCS national welfare chairperson Deborah Bwalya explained that the acute crisis project focuses on three key areas; emergency cash support, livelihood recovery and disaster risk reduction.
Bwalya said the efforts aim to provide immediate relief, while strengthening communities against future climate shocks.
“Our goal is not just to provide aid, but to build resilience too. Together with government and local leaders, we will ensure this assistance makes a lasting impact,” Bwalya said.
Bwalya added that the project reflects ZRCS’s commitment to saving lives and restoring hope in crisis – affected communities.
