The Southern African Students and Youth Development Association (SAYSDA) has condemned the UPND’s secretary general Batuke Imenda on the party’s position with regards aspiring parliamentary candidates.
Imenda is quoted having cautioned aspiring parliamentary candidates to desist to among others, conducting premature campaigns in constituencies having sitting MPs.
His statement was contradictory to his deputy’s who advised long serving MPs to step aside and give chance to others ahead of next year’s elections.
However, Imenda dismissed the statement from his deputy Getrude Imenda.
Meanwhile, SAYSDA president general Ibrahim Mwamba has since described the statement by the ruling party SG as unfair especially to aspiring young leaders.
“We are alarmed by the recent announcement by the UPND Secretary General, Mr. Imenda, to restrict media coverage of aspiring candidates within the party. This move is draconian and akin to North Korea’s style of governance, which has no place in a democratic Zambia,” Mwamba said.
Mwamba condemned Imenda, alleging that his statement is an attempt to stifle freedom of expression, assembly, and the press.
“The Constitution of Zambia guarantees these fundamental human rights, and it is not within Mr. Imenda’s jurisdiction to dictate to the media industry who to cover, when to cover, and why to cover aspiring candidates,” he said.
Mwamba further stated that the move is particularly targeted at youths within the UPND party who have challenged long-serving members of parliament.
He said if political parties continue to favor old guard politicians, young people should consider running as independent candidates, adding that with the numbers on their side, the youth of Zambia have the power to govern the country.
“We demand that Mr. Imenda and the UPND leadership respect the democratic process and the fundamental human rights enshrined in the Constitution of Zambia,” he added.
