A 62-YEAR-OLD neighbour has allegedly defiled a two-year-old girl who was left in his care in Chief Kawaza’s Chiefdom of Katete District, Eastern Province.

Eastern Province police commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred on Friday.
Mweemba said the baby’s mother had left her in the custody of her neighbour around 12:00 hours while she went to the market.
He says upon returning from the market around 13:00 hours, the mother got back her daughter, who complained of pain in her private parts.
“After checking her, she found that her daughter’s private parts were swollen and bleeding and when questioned, the child disclosed that the neighbour had abused her.” Mweemba said.
The commissioner said following the discovery, the mother informed the community, who assisted in apprehending the suspect.
Mweemba confirmed that the suspect is currently detained while investigations have been instituted.
