WHEN you are found at an accident scene and you happen to be the first person to arrive, you have a duty to play regardless of your profession and standing in society.
When it comes to accident and crash scenes, we first deal with the three H. Hazards, Hello and Help.
HAZARDS
At the accident and crash scene, you first deal with the hazards that are bound to happen or have already happened. For example, in case of a car crash, you first ensure that triangles or any other substitutes are put in place to warn motorists that there is something on the road.
Doing the above will prevent you and the victims from being crashed whilst rendering help. This will also allow other motorist to come to your aid in case you need more help to deal with the situation.
HELLO
After securing the scene and preventing further crashes, walk over to the victims and shout HELLO!! to alert those that may be responsive and let them know that help has arrived.
Those that may be injured and need help will respond but if you are not a medical personnel nor a paramedic nor a first aid responder, DO NOT ATTEMPT to attend to those with visible injuries. Instead of helping, you may worsen the situation because of your lack of knowledge on how to pre-treat such injuries.
HELP
By help, it doesn’t mean you help the victims physically, if you are not a paramedic. You should simply call the emergency services.
While waiting for the paramedics to arrive, continue finding ways to make sure the scene is secure and continue assuring the responsive victims that help is on the way.
JOURNALIST
If you as a journalist were the first to arrive at the scene, the above procedure applies as well.
After the paramedics have arrived, you may introduce yourself to the team that you are a journalist and would like to have a report and may start recording the scene.
Remember, there is no need to rush into filming, the accident has already happened, nothing new will happen but you may actually have a good shot or story when the paramedics have arrived by capturing them in action doing their job.
LESSON
Make sure the scene is secure, assure the victims that help is coming and make sure you call for help from the emergency services.
Never attempt to lift the victims with injuries.
