Acting High Commissioner of the Republic of Zambia to Republic of South Africa, Ruth Dante, has called for enhanced regional cooperation in quality infrastructure, metrology, and trade standards.
Dante highlighted their central role in strengthening competitiveness, industrial growth, and market access across Southern Africa.
She made the remarks when she received a delegation from the Zambia Metrology Agency (ZMA) at the Zambian High Commission in Pretoria.
The visit formed part of ZMA’s regional benchmarking programme, aimed at deepening collaboration with regional and continental institutions responsible for standardization, accreditation, and quality assurance.
The ZMA delegation, led by Chief Executive Officer, Humphrey Nkobeni and Chief Technical Officer Charity Kasama Banda, engaged Mission officials First Secretary (Trade) Mwami Mainga and First Secretary (Tourism) Vincent Mupwaya on Zambia’s ongoing participation in regional and international standardization initiatives.
Dante emphasized that Zambia’s active role in advancing regional quality systems is consistent with the country’s foreign policy objectives on economic diplomacy, regional integration, and sustainable industrialization.
“Quality and standards are the foundation of competitiveness,” she said. “Zambia’s active participation in regional metrology and trade standards platforms strengthens our credibility, supports industrialization, and aligns with President Hakainde Hichilema’s vision to transform Zambia into a regional trade and logistics hub.”
Meanwhile, Charity Kasama Banda commended the Zambian Mission for its continued support and noted that Zambia’s National Quality Policy provides a framework for aligning national systems with regional and international standards.
Banda underscored that cooperation through SADC and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is key to unlocking broader market access for Zambian products.
“Zambia’s focus is to ensure that our products meet international benchmarks,” Ms. Banda said. “Regional cooperation in standards and metrology reduces technical barriers to trade and allows our goods to compete effectively in any market.”
Speaking at the same meeting, Nkobeni highlighted the importance of accurate measurement, inspection, and verification systems in fostering trust and transparency across value chains.
He explained that ZMA’s initiatives have improved quality assurance in sectors such as energy, agriculture, and manufacturing, boosting consumer confidence and trade efficiency.
Meanwhile, Mainga reaffirmed the Mission’s support for Zambia’s trade facilitation and industrialization agenda, noting that consistent standards are essential for improving the country’s competitiveness and integration into regional markets.
The engagement reaffirmed Zambia’s continued commitment to regional economic diplomacy and its leadership in advancing standards, quality infrastructure, and sustainable trade development across Africa.
This is contained in a statement issued by Alexander Musokotwane, First Secretary (Press and Public Relations) at the Zambian High Commission, in Pretoria, South Africa.
