Residents of Kapiri Mposhi are still reeling in shock after a tragic road accident along the Great – North Highway on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, claimed the lives of nine passengers, leaving only one woman to walk away without a scratch.
The survivor, 33-year-old Purity Mukoma from Serenje, says she owes her life to a special protective ring given to her by renowned traditional healer Dr Mawanda.
The grisly accident occurred just after 15hrs. when a speeding min bus belonging to a popular transport company lost control near Kapiri Mposhi round about, veering off the road and rolling several times before landing in a ditch.
Witnesses reported hearing screams as the bus flipped, while traders nearby rushed to the scene to try to assist survivors.
“I had boarded the bus in Lusaka town heading to Chingola to attend my cousin’s wedding,” Mukoma recounted in an exclusive interview on Monday. “Everything seemed fine until we approached Kapiri Mposhi.
I heard a loud bang, and before I could understand what was happening, the bus was rolling. I closed my eyes and clutched the ring tightly in my hand. When it stopped, I was still in my seat, untouched.”
According to survivors’ accounts and rescue workers, most passengers were thrown around violently inside the bus, leading to severe injuries and fatalities. Shockingly, Mukoma was still seated upright, her handbag beside her, as if nothing had happened. She walked out of the wreckage without assistance.
“I know people might doubt me, but I had gone to see Dr Mawanda three weeks ago for protection during my travels,” she explained. “He gave me this ring and told me to always wear it when going anywhere far. I believe with all my heart that it’s the only reason I’m alive today.”
Local police confirmed that the accident was caused by brake failure, but the mystery of Mukoma’s survival quickly became the focus of discussion.
Onlookers at the scene were astonished when she emerged calmly, with only dust on her clothes, and some even fell to their knees in disbelief.
Word spread quickly in Kapiri Mposhi that the ring had supernatural protection, drawing curious neighbours, church members, and taxi drivers to her home on Monday morning to see it for themselves. Some took photos, while others touched the ring and prayed silently.
Purity’s neighbour, Sarah Chaaba, told reporters she had seen Purity wearing the ring daily since she got it. “She told me she had visited Dr Mawanda for protection. We laughed about it then, but today, I’m a believer,” Sarah Chaaba said.
By Monday afternoon, calls were already being made to reach the healer, with several residents expressing interest in obtaining similar protective charms, especially those who travel frequently.
When contacted, Dr Mawanda declined to comment on the specific case but confirmed that he offers various spiritual protection services, including rings, amulets, and blessings for safe journeys. “What I give depends on the person’s needs,” he said.
This is not the first time Mawanda’s name has surfaced in connection to unusual survivals. Last year, a man from Mufulira claimed that a protective talisman from Mawanda saved him from a fatal mine collapse, a story that also went viral in local news.
As investigations into the Kapiri Mposhi accident continue, Purity Mukoma says she will never travel without the ring again. “Some people may think it’s coincidence,” she said, “but when you experience something like this, you know there are things beyond human understanding.”
